Reading rebar conformance: PS 1879, ASTM A615 and BCP-2021

Reinforcing steel sits on Pakistan's compulsory-certification list, so PSQCA conformity is required at import regardless of origin. On any given consignment a specifier is usually reconciling three references at once: the Pakistan Standard, an international grade the mill certifies to, and the design provisions of the Building Code of Pakistan.

The yield grade alone does not settle suitability: BCP-2021's seismic provisions place ductility and elongation requirements on bars used in seismic-force-resisting systems, which is why the ductility class on an EN/BS certificate (for example B500B vs B500A) matters as much as the yield number.

This is general reference material. Specification decisions for a specific structure must be made by the responsible engineer against the current code text and the actual test certificate.

What to look for on the certificate

A mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 is the universal trust currency: it ties the heat number to the tested mechanical properties (yield, tensile, elongation) and chemistry. Confirm the heat number is traceable, the standard cited matches the design basis, and PSQCA conformity is evidenced for import.
