BIM in Pakistan: no mandate yet, but don't wait to get your data in order

Building Information Modelling has become a submission requirement across parts of the Gulf: Dubai Municipality and Saudi authorities moved to compulsory BIM on large projects. Pakistan has no equivalent mandate. BIM adoption here is concentrated in a smaller number of large consultancies and internationally-specified projects, rather than required across the board.

Why that is not a reason to wait

The absence of a mandate changes the timeline, not the direction. International contractors and consultants working in Pakistan increasingly expect structured product data, and the projects most worth winning are exactly the ones already working to those expectations. The work that makes a product 'BIM-ready' (clean, structured, machine-readable specification data) is the same work that makes it easy to search, filter, compare and quote today.

Get the data right first, the geometry later

A useful sequence for a supplier or specifier: first, put specification data into a structured form: attributes, units, standards and conformance as data, not as a flat PDF. Second, attach design assets (2D CAD, then BIM objects) to that data as projects call for them. Done in that order, adding BIM later is an enhancement, not a migration.

The trap is treating BIM as a library of objects to build first. The value is in the underlying product data; the objects are a delivery format for it.
